Adult Jujitsu and More

The Zanshin Martial Arts Program aims to provide students with a comprehensive self-defense curriculum. With strong roots in the traditional martial arts of Japan, the Zanshin Dojo curriculum features striking, joint locks, takedowns, ground scenarios, and weapons defense. All instructors have extensively cross-trained in the four martial arts of Japan: Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, and Karate with additional self-defense study incorporating techniques from boxing, kickboxing, and wrestling. Students will have the opportunity to practice and drill techniques cooperatively with coaching and feedback from instructors. They will also experience the application of these techniques in a more “live” or application format with active resistance from their peers. As students learn, develop, and refine their technical abilities over time, their confidence will grow alongside their fitness and skill set.

YOUTH Jujitsu and more

Zanshin instructors have been teaching the martial arts to children, ages 8 to 13, since 1990. Although the curriculum parallels the same skills required in the adult class, the youth program places even greater emphasis on self-discipline and positive life-choices. Far more than a simple study of physical techniques, students progress from controlling their own fears and behaviors to performing under pressure. After several months of training, student have opportunities to develop their leadership skills both on and off the mat.

Opportunities to compete in local and national tournaments, are available and encouraged, but not required.Judo is an Olympic sport focused on throwing an opponent to the mat and pinning them there. Daitoryu Aikijujitsu Roppokai

Daitoryu originated approximately 900 years ago with Shinra Saburo Minamoto no Yoshimitsu (1045-1127) and was a Minamoto clan samurai. Yoshimitsu’s great grandson Nobuyoshi adopted the surname, “Takeda” and the art was then passed down through the Takeda family. Kodo Horikawa continued in this tradition and passed his instruction to Seigo Okamoto and others. I started training with Okamoto Sensei in 1990 and Oregon Roppokai was designated a school of Seigo Okamoto in 1996.
Daitoryu is considered the precursor martial art to Aikido. Roppokai focuses on using small circles and natural or casual stances. One of the key components of Roppokai is its practitioners use minimal muscle power to control or manipulate a threat.

Shaolin do kung fu

Shaolin Do, or “The way of Shaolin,” traces its lineage to the Fukien Temple in Southern China, more than 1500 years ago. Shaolin Do consists of over 100 different styles, including animal systems like snake, tiger, and dragon, weapon systems such as bo staff, broadsword, and spear, as well as internal arts, such as meditations, Bagua, and Tai Chi. Despite the destruction of the temples around 1870, the Shaolin spirit lives on through Shaolin Do.  Classes will consist of workouts to improve physical conditioning, training empty-hand and weapon-based katas to improve mental conditioning, exploring applications of techniques within katas, and sparring.

OUR COMMUNITY SERVICE MISSION

As a non-profit organization, Zanshin Dojo is dedicated to providing all members of the community with access to high quality martial arts and self-defense instruction in a world class facility. Our individual rate of $50 per month and our family rate of $80 per month are intentionally far lower than typical martial arts programs in order to make exceptional training available to everyone. Families in financial hardship can receive waived tuition through work-study or scholarship, and children can obtain uniforms through a dojo donation program. The traditional Japanese Martial Arts serve as a foundation for teaching self-confidence and self-control as well as social responsibility. Our students learn self-defense as they increase their fitness and improve their ability to reach their goals in life and contribute to their community. Students participate in an annual outreach event in which they identify and help community members in need. Instructors volunteer their time and passion in the hope that students will one day become Zanshin instructors themselves and continue the tradition.

WHY ZANSHIN?

Students that pursue their martial arts training with us become a part of the Zanshin family. The connection to instructors and fellow students provides an enriching life experience that extends beyond physical training. Our world class facility is perfectly suited to self-defense and martial arts training. By operating as a non-profit, Zanshin gives access to equipment and instruction that would normally be financially out of reach for many members of the community.
